In this itinerary, we invite you to discover the charms of Tokyo’s historic shitamachi (‘low city’ or downtown) districts after dark, taking you from art appreciation and shopping to a drink at a local izakaya or standing bar steeped in each neighborhood’s atmosphere.
Catch an exhibition at
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
On Fridays during special and temporary exhibitions, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum remains open until 8pm, allowing visitors to enjoy art after dark. The building itself, designed by Kunio Maekawa, is an architectural highlight in itself.
Other cultural institutions that make Ueno Park home include the National Museum of Western Art, whose main building and grounds have been designated a World Heritage Site, and the Tokyo National Museum, which also stay open until 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Admire the Bentendo Hall at Shinobazu Pond, a famous landmark of Edo-Tokyo
Standing on the shore of Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park, you’ll see Bentendo Hall, a historic temple built in the seventeenth century. During certain times of the year, visitors can admire the magical sight of the temple’s main hall illuminated at night, and its reflection shimmering across the surface of the pond.
Go shopping around Ueno and Okachimachi
One of the greatest draws of the Ueno and Okachimachi area is its mix of independent brick-and-mortar shops and modern shopping centers.
Matsuzakaya Ueno is a historic department store that has been operating on the same site since the Edo period (1603–1868). While its exterior has a contemporary appearance, its retro elevators and elegant staircases are worth checking out. In the basement and first-floor food hall, Hoppe Town, you will find a wide selection of sweets that make excellent souvenirs.
You can also visit shopping complexes such as Parco_ya Ueno – or a little farther away, Ueno Marui – both of which are home to fashion and cultural retailers. Choose one that suits your interests.
Explore Ameyoko Shopping Street
Stretching between Ueno Station and Okachimachi Station, Ameyoko Shopping Street is a lively market district with around 400 shops packed into a 500-meter stretch.
One highlight is the Ameyoko Center Building, instantly recognizable by its distinctive triangular exterior. Step inside to discover an atmosphere that feels almost foreign, with restaurants from all over the world, as well as shops selling groceries, fashion, household goods, and more.
The area is also home to numerous izakaya and takeaway food stalls, making it an ideal place to stop for dinner after exploring.
Enjoy the nighttime atmosphere around Okachimachi
Continue on foot from Ameyoko to Okachimachi. The neighborhood is dotted with standing bars and traditional izakaya, offering a distinctly local atmosphere.
If you’re not quite ready to call it a night after dinner, stop by one of these casual drinking spots for a quick sip and experience a slice of everyday nightlife in Tokyo.
End the day with a pit stop in Ueno
If you still have some energy left, make one last stop before heading home and take a moment to reflect on the day’s adventures. Around Ueno Station you’ll find a variety of bars and other venues that are perfect for one final drink. Alternatively, you could unwind with coffee and dessert at a cafe that’s open late into the night.
