Tokyo never sleeps—but the city also offers plenty of options for a peaceful night. Whether you’re looking to unwind at a hot-spring spa, take a quiet stroll through a park, or immerse yourself in the great outdoors on a remote island, Tokyo has just the right relaxing experience for you.

Relax and unwind at a hot-spring facility

When it comes to bathing in Tokyo, traditional communal bathhouses (sento) are one of the most classic options. Soaking in a large, warm bath, you’ll slowly feel the fatigue of the day melt away. Each bathhouse brims with unique character, whether it’s a classic establishment featuring a traditional mural of Mt. Fuji or a newly renovated, modern option. Check out the Tokyo Sento Association’s website for full details before visiting.

Large-scale hot-spring complexes are also popular. Spa LaQua, where you can enjoy open-air foot pools and night views of the Tokyo Dome amusement park, and Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club, with its open-air baths overlooking Tokyo Bay, offer luxurious, extraordinary moments.

Tokyo’s parks let you feel close to nature without leaving the city center—and they’re perfect for a peaceful evening stroll, too. If you’re looking to snap impressive photos, head to Minato City Shiba Park, which offers beautiful views of the illuminated Tokyo Tower after sunset.

Meiji Park adjacent to the Japan National Stadium, the venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, encompasses a cafe and the hot-spring facility TOTOPA. Here you can go for a leisurely walk with a coffee in hand, or attend a seasonal event like an open-air movie screening or a candlelight gathering.

See the city from the water

If time permits, consider planning a trip to some of Tokyo’s outlying islands—both the Izu and Ogasawara archipelagos are administratively part of Tokyo. Kozu, one of the Izu Islands, is the first place in Tokyo to be certified as an International Dark Sky Park®, providing stunning views of the night sky.

On Shikinejima Island, the open-air Matsugashita Miyabi Hot Spring is open around the clock and lets you soak in perfect tranquility by the sea. Bathing while listening to the sound of waves and feeling the ocean breeze makes for a luxurious experience you won’t find elsewhere. The calm atmosphere and natural beauty of Shikine is sure to rejuvenate both mind and body.

Nighttime Tokyo offers diverse options for refreshing yourself at your own pace. Find your own way to unwind and discover the restorative experience just right for you.
