When you think of Tokyo, the city that never sleeps, nightlife is usually what comes to mind first. But the capital is also quietly a great place to be for early birds. Here’s how to start your day—or end a long night—with a delicious breakfast, a visit to a vibrant market, a prayer at a solemn shrine or temple, or a view of the rising sun.

Start with breakfast

The typical Japanese breakfast consists of rice, miso soup, and grilled fish. In Tokyo, you can enjoy this traditional morning meal at most accommodations, as well as several local eateries that open early.

Breakfast sets are available at many chain restaurants, which make an appealing option for a quick stop. For example, beef bowl chains often offer Japanese breakfasts alongside their regular menu in the morning.

Standing-style soba noodle shops, found near or inside train stations, cater especially to busy office workers. Enjoying a quick meal, then promptly leaving your spot at the counter so that the next customer can enter, is said to be the Tokyo way. A warming and soothing bowl of soba also makes for the perfect meal to close out a long night.

Stop by a bustling market

Wholesale markets are the backbone of Tokyo’s renowned culinary scene. At Toyosu Market, one of the world’s largest fish markets, seafood trading starts before dawn. Anyone can observe the action from a viewing deck, but the famous tuna auction is so popular that viewing tickets are allocated by lottery. Those hoping to attend are advised to familiarize themselves with the application process well in advance.

Take in some shrines and temples

As you walk through Tokyo, you will notice how the city is dotted with temples and shrines that blend seamlessly into the cityscape. Most of these religious sites are small and local, but some of the larger and more renowned sanctuaries attract visitors from all over the world.

Many of Tokyo’s most historic shrines and temples bustle with worshippers, with places like Meiji Jingu in Harajuku, Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, and Kanda Myojin Shrine in Ochanomizu tending to get congested during the day. Consider avoiding the crowds by visiting early, and start your day by paying your respects in the crisp morning air.

See the sunrise

Tokyo doesn’t just look pretty at night. If you know where to go, catching the sunrise in the city can be a truly special experience.

One popular sunrise spot is Haneda Airport, Tokyo’s gateway to the skies. Facing Tokyo Bay, its observation deck offers stunning views. Another noteworthy option is the bayside Kasai Rinkai Park in the easternmost part of Tokyo. On clear days, it’s possible to spot Mt. Fuji from here, the sacred peak illuminated by the morning rays.

Tokyo has many spots to enjoy both the end of the day and the start of a new one. Why not venture out into the city early to experience its vibrant energy?
