Tokyo Bunka Kaikan
*Closing temporarily on May 7, 2026
Built by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 1961 as part of the celebrations marking 500 years since the founding of the city that would become Tokyo, the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan comprises the vast Main Hall and the smaller Recital Hall, in addition to rehearsal rooms, conference rooms, a restaurant, and a music archive. Its acoustics have been described as “miraculous,” and the facility hosts performances by world-famous artists across opera, ballet, and classical music. It’s also notable for its architecture—the work of Kunio Maekawa, who studied under Le Corbusier and greatly influenced postwar Japanese modernist architecture.
