New National Theatre, Tokyo

The New National Theatre, Tokyo is the only institution of its kind in Japan dedicated to contemporary performing arts: opera, ballet, dance, and theater. It houses three distinct theaters: the Opera Palace, designed for opera and ballet; the Playhouse, which accommodates a diverse range of performance styles; and the Pit, where the entire floor—including the seating—can be moved, allowing the space to be freely reconfigured according to each director’s vision. Also in the complex are restaurants and a theater shop, where visitors can enjoy drinks and light meals before the performance or during intermission.
