Nihombashi Takashimaya S.C. Main Building
First opened in 1933, this historic department store was designated as Japan’s first Important Cultural Property in its category. Its architecture blends Western historical styles with traditional Japanese design. The first- and second-floor atriums still feature the original coffered ceilings and marble pillars from when the building was constructed. One of the best-known attractions is the retro manually operated elevator, attended by dedicated elevator staff. From luxury brands to long-established confectioners and acclaimed gourmet offerings, the department store provides an opportunity to experience refined shopping alongside Japan’s renowned tradition of hospitality.
