This unique Bon Odori dance event sees participants performing while dressed as yokai—mythical creatures from ancient Japanese folklore. It began in the city of Fussa in 2019 and is currently held at GREEN SPRINGS, a multi-purpose complex in the suburban city of Tachikawa in western Tokyo. Last year’s festival drew an estimated 50,000 attendees over three days and sparked a huge frenzy. In addition to authentic Bon Odori dancing accompanied by a live band, the event features a diverse lineup of attractions, including performances by top-tier artists, DJ sets, a yokai contest, a yokai makeup booth, and a sideshow performance reminiscent of a haunted house. Note that attendees must either wear a yokai costume, a yukata (summer kimono), or official event merchandise such as a T-shirt. It’s an opportunity for visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in the extraordinary world of yokai.
