Ways of Reading―How the World Speaks to Us, How We Speak to the World
Held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, this exhibition zooms in on the act of reading—a process of venturing into the unknown and deepening one’s understanding. Through five “ways of reading”—light, time, words, nature, and imagining with one’s whole body—it explores the various ways in which we engage with the world. On display are works by five artists: Alberto Giacometti, a master of twentieth-century sculpture; Momo Yamanishi, an up-and-coming artist; poet Shuntaro Tanikawa; woodcarver and painter Bikki Sunazawa; and contemporary artist Elena Tutatchikova. Yamanishi showcases a collection centered on new pinhole photographs taken in Nepal in December 2025, while Tutatchikova’s presentation is composed almost entirely of new works. Amid the interplay of works spanning different eras and genres, the exhibition invites you to discover your own unique perspective on “reading” the world.
