How Japan Became a Photography Powerhouse: The Beginnings
In today’s world, we are exposed to a vast number of photographs every day. This exhibition takes a step back, exploring how that state of affairs came to be, by focusing on how photography was introduced to Japan and came to be widely adopted. Centered on works from the Fujifilm Photo Collection, the exhibition presents a carefully curated selection of approximately 30 items. These include historical photographic equipment—such as the oldest surviving camera obscura in Japan, built in the mid-1800s—as well as rare books on photography from the 1850s to the early 1900s. Together, the artifacts offer a fascinating introduction to the early history of photography in Japan.
