Tokyo Downtown Bamboo Lantern Festival
In the evenings from November 7, 2026 to January 31, 2027, the warm glow of Take Akari bamboo lanterns will illuminate the Tokyo Mizumachi area and the Sumida River Walk between Asakusa and TOKYO SKYTREE®. The event was first held in 2022 at the nearby Ushijima Shrine, and this year’s edition will see approximately 200 meters of the Kita-Jikkengawa River Terrace illuminated with bamboo balls (takemari) and lights, marking the first attempt to incorporate the river itself into the displays. On opening day, November 7, there will be a lighting ceremony and two waterside concerts performed by members of the New Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Bamboo lanterns will be lit at locations including Ushijima Shrine and Sumida Park, while a surprise display will see the garden eels of the Sumida Aquarium transformed into bamboo lanterns.
Note: This project is supported by a grant from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau for the promotion of night time tourism.
