Manga artists Moto Hagio, Ryoko Yamagishi, and Waki Yamato all debuted in the late 1960s and have remained at the forefront of the Japanese comics world for nearly 60 years. This exhibition—the first large-scale display of shojo manga ever held at a national art museum in Japan, and commemorating the 20th anniversary of the National Art Center, Tokyo—traces the artistic careers of these three masters. Moto Hagio weaves fantastical narrative worlds; Ryoko Yamagishi sharply explores human nature and spirituality; and Waki Yamato creates dazzling works set against historical and cultural backdrops. Their three distinct personalities built the golden age of shojo manga and imbued it with rich depth. More than 800 original black-and-white and color illustrations are on display, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the delicate lines and colors, as well as the sense of time flowing across the pages, through the unique texture of the original artworks. *Some of the color works will be rotated between the first and second exhibition periods.
