From Kiyochika to Hasui: Ukiyo-e and Shin-Hanga Woodblock Prints from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art
On loan from the prestigious Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, this prized collection of Japanese art features some 130 exceptional works including ukiyo-e and shin-hanga prints, as well as photographs. Zooming in on the twilight of the ukiyo-e art form at the turn of the nineteenth century, the exhibition highlights “light paintings” by Kobayashi Kiyochika, one of the last ukiyo-e artists; works by publisher Shozaburo Watanabe, who sought to preserve vanishing techniques while creating prints for a new era; and photographs documenting the people and customs of Meiji-era (1868–1912) Japan.
