Shimomura Kanzan: Life, Art and Society

Shimomura Kanzan (1873–1930) is hailed as a genius artist who showed a new forward for Nihonga, or traditional Japanese painting. This retrospective exhibition features approximately 150 works and traces Kanzan’s trajectory from his youth through to his emergence as a leading figure in the art world following two years of study in England. It also highlights the results of his research into ancient Japanese and Chinese paintings, as well as his painting projects centered on Noh theater, exploring the appeal of his art from a variety of angles.
