The Art of Film Posters in Japan: Revisited
“The Art of Film Posters in Japan: Revisited” explores the intersection of film and graphic design through more than 90 posters created primarily between the 1960s and 1980s. The exhibition is organized into four sections, featuring works by postwar artists such as Hisamitsu Noguchi and Shigemi Hijikata; a new generation of graphic designers from the 1960s, including Kiyoshi Awazu, Tadanori Yokoo, and Makoto Wada; the free-spirited expressions of the Art Theatre Guild, which specialized in distributing foreign arthouse films; and works by the many designers, illustrators, and manga artists who shaped the country’s cultural landscape from the 1970s onward. You’ll find pieces that masterfully capture the emotional essence of film, as well as works that will surprise you with their unexpected twists.
