MOMAT Collection (2025.11.5–2026.2.8)
With its MOMAT Collection exhibitions, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo showcases highlights from its collection of roughly 14,000 pieces, displaying approximately 200 works per session. Each of the 12 interconnected exhibition rooms features a micro-theme, through the combination of which visitors can trace the evolution of Japanese modern and contemporary art from the late nineteenth century to the present. A highlight of this installment is the work “Harmless Kitty” (1994) by Yoshitomo Nara, which recently returned from an extended overseas loan. Room 9 on the third floor features photographer Eikoh Hosoe’s early masterpiece “Ordeal by Roses.” The exhibition serves as a memorial to Hosoe, who passed away in 2024, and also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of his subject, the novelist Yukio Mishima.
