Film Director Kenji Mizoguchi
Held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the passing of Kenji Mizoguchi, this exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective of the master filmmaker’s work. It explores the cinematic artistry of Mizoguchi, who created numerous internationally acclaimed masterpieces such as “Ugetsu” and “Sansho the Bailiff.” Displays include valuable materials left behind by the esteemed artisans who supported the “Mizoguchi Group,” including cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa, production designer Hiroshi Mizutani, and composer Fumio Hayasaka. Through a combination of film footage and digital exhibits, the exhibition unravels Mizoguchi’s directorial techniques. Guest talks and other related events are scheduled throughout the exhibition period.
