Kyōsai's World: The Israel Goldman Collection

A mercurial figure in Japan’s 19th-century art world, Kawanabe Kyōsai remains popular in both Japan and abroad. Having briefly studied with the ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi, he tackled a wide range of subjects, from religious motifs to caricatures, animals, and supernatural creatures, demonstrating exceptional technical skill and a wealth of ingenuity across his oeuvre. This exhibition features a carefully curated selection of approximately 110 works from the collection of Israel Goldman, a leading U.K.-based collector of Kyōsai’s art. In addition to recognized masterpieces including original paintings and prints, the display highlights works making their exhibition debut in Japan.
