Taking over the city of Fuchu to the west of central Tokyo, this jazz festival features live performances by around 120 bands selected through an open call. The shows take place at approximately 20 venues, including streets, cafes, and concert halls, all around Fuchu Station. Since the festival brings together a diverse array of bands both professional and amateur, it encourages attendees to casually hop from venue to venue, enjoying the widely different musical styles and atmospheres on offer at each location. Another major feature is how everyone involved with the event—staff, performers, audience members, venue providers, and local merchant associations—plays a supporting role. JAZZ in FUCHU has become an indispensable autumn tradition in Fuchu, making for a day when the sounds of jazz can be heard throughout the city.
