This large-scale retrospective by contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto marks his first major exhibition at a Japanese art museum since 2005. While Sugimoto is active in a wide range of fields, including architecture and the staging of traditional performing arts, the roots of his art lie in silver gelatin photography. In today’s digital age, this technique can truly be called endangered. “Extinction” presents approximately 60 silver gelatin prints spanning from early works from the late 1970s to the present. The exhibition is organized into three chapters—“Time, Light and Memory,” “Conceptual Forms,” and “Extinction”—comprising a total of 13 series. It also features new works being shown for the first time alongside representative pieces such as “Dioramas” and “Seascapes.” Additionally, admission to the exhibition includes access to the Collection Exhibitions on the third floor.
