The Tokyo National Museum recently received a donation of 1,025 ukiyo-e prints collected by Susumu Uchiyama (1893–1980). Uchiyama was a collector who focused on high-quality works, particularly those by the Edo-period (1603–1868) artist Utagawa Hiroshige, and dedicated himself to sharing their appeal with a wide audience. To commemorate this valuable donation, this exhibition will be held in three phases, showcasing masterpieces of landscape and nature painting, with a focus on Hiroshige’s three major series: “The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido,” “The Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido,” and “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.” Hiroshige’s works skillfully depict the changing weather and time of day as well as the lives of the people in them. They not only captivated the people of Edo at the time, but later influenced Western painters such as Van Gogh and Monet. This is an unparalleled opportunity to view all works from the three major series at once.
