Hiroh Kikai Photo Exhibition: Persona – Tamasaburo Bando
Unpublished works by photographer Hiroh Kikai, capturing the young Kabuki actor Tamasaburo Bando in 1976 and kept private until shortly before his death in 2020, are exhibited here for the first time. The 25 valuable vintage prints—portraits shot at Tokyo’s Sensoji Temple—explore the vision that led to Kikai’s seminal work “Persona,” and are exhibited alongside modern prints meticulously selected from surviving negatives. Don’t miss the photographs shot with a telephoto lens—an uncommon choice for Kikai—on his 35mm SLR camera to capture Bando on stage, along with rare square photos taken with a medium-format camera. Also on special display is a camera gifted to the photographer by his mentor, the philosopher Sadayoshi Fukuda.
