100th Anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art MuseumEdo in Focus: Japanese Treasures from the British Museum

The Japanese collection at the revered British Museum in London is regarded as one of the most comprehensive collections of its kind outside Japan, in terms of both quantity and quality. This exhibition presents a carefully curated selection of outstanding works from that trove of some 40,000 pieces, with a focus on paintings from the Edo period (1603–1868)—including folding screens, hanging scrolls, and picture scrolls—as well as woodblock prints by eight leading ukiyo-e artists, such as Utamaro, Sharaku, Hokusai, and Hiroshige. Furthermore, by shedding light on the results of recent research and the background of the museum’s acquisitions, the exhibition traces the role the British Museum has played at the forefront of collecting, researching, and preserving Japanese art.
