A leading Zen temple in northern Kyoto, Daitokuji was founded in 1326 and flourished as a center of devotion for emperors, warlords, and tea masters such as Sen no Rikyu. It was praised by the fourteenth-century emperor Go-Daigo as a Zen temple without equal in Japan. Marking the 700th anniversary of Daitokuji’s founding, this exhibition brings together treasures from within the temple complex, including associated temples, to showcase its history and culture. This is the first time in 41 years that such an exhibition featuring items normally not publicly displayed has been held, and it marks the first time such an exhibition has taken place in Tokyo. Visitors can admire numerous priceless artifacts, including a tea bowl designated as a National Treasure, as well as items associated with the sixteenth-century warlords Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
