ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2026
Sensoji Temple in Asakusa will be bathed in light for five days during this event. The highlight is the first-ever projection mapping display held at Sensoji’s main hall, which along with the Hozomon Gate becomes a backdrop for images inspired by the temple’s 1,400-year history and culture. Expect to see giant ema plaques, a scroll depicting the temple’s origins, and ukiyo-e prints associated with Sensoji come to life in vivid color. In addition, the Denboin Garden, a scenic spot normally closed to the public, and the Ema Hall, which houses approximately 50 paintings by artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi, will be open to the public exclusively for these five days. The garden will play host to a “sea of clouds” light display, while in the evenings, the Kinryu Yakai (“Golden Dragon Night”) festival will feature illuminations and original dance performances. Once the lights of bustling Nakamise Street have dimmed, you’ll get to discover a side of Sensoji Temple quite unlike any other.
