As part of a series celebrating beauty in everyday life, the Suntory Museum of Art is presenting this special exhibition featuring a wide variety of Japanese ceramic tableware. It contains primarily pieces created between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, including large plates, bowls, and distinctive small serving dishes (mukozuke). People of that era imbued the shapes and patterns of their tableware with messages of auspiciousness and seasonal sensibility, selecting it to delight guests by providing a feast for the eyes alongside the food served. In addition to Japanese tableware, the exhibition encompasses ceramics imported from China and other countries, offering a glimpse into the vibrant curiosity about beauty that characterized the era.
